Commercial restroom design has evolved in recent years to make water savings a higher priority—and Sloan has responded with the industry’s largest selection of water saving products. Yet saving water is just one part of a bigger conversation: corporate responsibility.
That’s why, last year, Sloan committed to a new level of product transparency—broadening our focus from gallons per flush to the impact of production details on both environmental health and human health.
Our industry-leading offering of third party-verified, cradle-to-grave transparency reports recognizes the impact of many of our most popular high-efficiency products through their entire life-cycles, including resource extraction and processing, product manufacture and assembly, distribution/transport, use and maintenance and end-of-life.
As our list of available transparency reports grows, so does the interest from architects, designers, engineers and building owners. With more than 300 product transparency reports now available, we wanted to share a quick overview of each type of report.
Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)
Environmental Product Declarations, or EPDs, are based on the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of a particular product. The EPD details the life cycle impact of that product and its environmental impacts, taking into consideration recycled content, service life, water and soil pollution, global warming potential, ozone depletion and smog creation.
We work with SCS Global—and follow the strict guidelines of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14044 standard—to develop the rigorous cradle-to-grave life cycle assessments for our Type III EPDs. They are also third party-verified to ensure the quality of the data provided in our Declarations is of the highest caliber.
We currently have 6 EPDs covering more than 200 high-efficiency products in our lineup.
Health Product Declarations (HPDs)
Health Product Declarations, or HPDs, disclose the materials or ingredients in our products and their associated human health effects. The HPD was created by the not-for-profit Health Product Declaration Collaborative to be the industry standard format for conveying details about product content and associated health information.
HPD’s also help project teams to achieve the new LEED® Building product disclosure and optimization credits and the Living Building Challenge™ Materials Red List Imperative.
Sloan is the only commercial plumbing manufacturer to offer Health Product Declarations. We currently offer 6 HPDs covering more than 200 high-efficiency products in our lineup.
Declare labels are like nutrition labels for our products. They answer questions like where a product comes from, what it's made of and where it goes at the end its life.
The International Living Future Institute (ILFI) developed the Declare label to let manufacturers publicly announce the life-cycle sustainability of their products. ILFI identifies more than 800 “Red List” chemicals as hazardous to humans and/or the environment, then certifies products based on the criteria of the Living Building Challenge (LBC):
- LBC Red List Free, which means the product is free of all red list ingredients
- LBC Compliant, which means the product contains some Red List chemicals, or
- Declared, which means the product is not compliant with the Red List or its temporary exceptions.
We currently offer Declare labels covering flushometers and both hybrid and waterfree urinals, and we’re proud to say that 17 of these products are rated Red List Free. And we have more coming later this year.
