Last fall, we introduced a line of carbon-neutral commercial restroom products made possible by a partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, which creates and restores forests and other ecosystems that remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
In advance of last month’s Arbor Day, the Foundation released a video in which Sloan Director of Corporate Sustainability Patrick Boyle and others discuss the benefits of carbon offsets obtained through the Foundation.
“Carbon offsetting is the next evolution of sustainability here at Sloan,” Boyle says in the video. “We’ve just recently rolled out a line of Sloan’s first-ever carbon-neutral products, the first of its kind in our industry. We’re relying on carbon offsets through the Arbor Day Foundation to offset the carbon that’s embodied within those products.”
Here’s a closer look at the carbon offset program that’s grown from our partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation.
Transparency and carbon footprints
Sloan is a company that takes sustainability very seriously. We’re always looking for ways to help our customers design and build more sustainable commercial restrooms, and we’re vigilant about our own impact on the environment.
Our transparency reports outline the environmental impact of many of our most popular flushometers, water closets, urinals, lavatories and flushometer/fixture combinations. One type of transparency report, the Environmental Product Declaration, describes our products’ carbon footprints in painstaking detail.
Every manufactured product has a carbon footprint—a quantity of carbon generated and released into the atmosphere during the processes of sourcing, producing, transporting and using it. But just knowing the carbon footprints of our products isn’t enough. We’re committed to offsetting that carbon impact.
That’s where our partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation comes in.
The rejuvenation of the Mississippi River Valley
We offset our products’ carbon usage with reforestry credits purchased from the Arbor Day Foundation. These carbon credits effectively cancel out the carbon emissions related to the products we manufacture.
Sloan’s carbon offsets go toward reforestation efforts in the Foundation’s Mississippi River Alluvial Valley forestry project—efforts that improve water quality, stabilize soil, help control flooding, restore wildlife habitats and create jobs.
In the video, Arbor Day Foundation President Dan Lambe says, “The Mississippi River Valley used to be covered with 25 million acres of forest. Today, there are less than 5 million acres still forested.
“This program has strengthened the watershed’s environmental health, helped to grow local economies, and it is providing a story of positive impact that our offsetting partners can be proud to support.”
Reduce the carbon footprint of your next project
Our carbon offset program and partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation mean that our customers can create more environmentally friendly commercial bathrooms. When you specify many of our most popular products, you receive credit certificates verifying that the carbon in that product has been retired and offset.
“Ever since we rolled out our carbon-neutral product line, we’ve had a lot of buzz, a lot of interest generated from our customers,” Boyle notes in the video. “The fact that we can offer a certificate that offers carbon offsets from the Arbor Day Foundation adds a layer of credibility to that.”
We’re thrilled to partner with the Arbor Day Foundation, and happy we can pass these carbon offsets on to our customers. Ask us how you can reduce the carbon footprint of your next project with our carbon-neutral commercial restroom products.
