Carbon Neutral from Coast-to-Coast

Sloan’s Director of Corporate Sustainability, Patrick Boyle, has had the opportunity to share his excitement around our EPDs, HPDs, Declare labels and our line of carbon neutral products many times during 2018. Sloan ‘s sustainability experts, Patrick Boyle, as well as Daniel Gleiberman, Sloan Manager of Product Compliance and Government Affairs, have been featured presenters at three recent sustainability conferences, Net Zero in Los Angeles, Living Product Expo in Pittsburgh and Greenbuild in Chicago.

Patrick presented at the Living Product Expo in Pittsburgh and Greenbuild Expo in Chicago and  Daniel Gleiberman, presented at the Net Zero Conference in Los Angeles.

At these events, audiences were made aware of Sloan’s industry leading initiatives regarding product sustainability and carbon neutrality. Sloan’s message of sustainability, water efficiency, innovation and product performance rings true for a variety of audiences.

Sloan was joined by SCS Global, Owens Corning and Interface at these conferences who also helped to educate the attendees on how companies are working to reduce the carbon footprint of their products. These companies are all very different, from being publically traded companies to privately owned, manufacturing to service providers, but all have one common goal – the education on the topic of how companies can reduce their carbon footprint.

Each of these companies has a wide array of methods for reducing their carbon footprint. For example, Sloan has partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation to invest in reforestation in the Mississippi River Valley.

Utilizing Life Cycle Assessments

Sloan utilized the data from our Life Cycle Assessments to invest in reforestation plots which builds equity back into the ecosystem — truly natural capital. Because one-third of all global emission come from deforestation, the time for trees is now. We stressed at these conferences that our connection with water extends beyond our product consumption levels to beneficial and long term environmental and societal benefits.

Owens Corning has also introduced a reduced carbon product. While they also utilized the data from their Life Cycle Assessments, Owens Corning has purchased Renewable Energy Credits – wind energy to offset all of the electricity to produce their products.

Interface has taken specifically selected plant-derived carbon and converted it into a durable material that stores that carbon for at least a generation. Every day plants pull carbon out of the atmosphere through photosynthesis but release it when they decompose. The carbon is stored in the materials that make up the Proof Positive tile. Its negative carbon footprint was achieved directly through design and manufacturing, without purchasing carbon offsets.

Lessons Learned

Manufactures like Sloan are striving to ensure that architects, designers and building owners are aware of how the products they specify can help them achieve Net Zero buildings. Having product offerings like Sloan’s new line of smart, interactive faucets is a great benefit because you have to really know how much water you need in order to adequately address your supply needs. And what better way to look at healthy buildings than to proudly share how our products are made.

Sloan is at the forefront of sustainable leadership and is in good company with Owens Corning and Interface. Taking the initiative to fully offset the embodied carbon in our products is something that no other commercial plumbing manufacturer can say that they do.

From the 1906 invention of the Royal® Flushometer to today’s automatic fixtures, Sloan’s innovations have saved building owners billions of gallons of water. Checkout our line of carbon neutral flushometers, lavatories, water closets and urinals .
