4. Sloan Valve

What it makes: Plumbing fixtures
Patents last year: 5
Sloan Valve has been reinventing plumbing for nearly 120 years, starting with a unique device to flush toilets that it called the Flushometer.

Since then, it has brought digital technology into play with a line of smart products — such as toilets, faucets, soap dispensers and hand dryers — that can be serviced remotely or turned on automatically by motion sensors.

Now it's looking to add lighting to the mix. One patent granted last year details an LED light ring that indicates whether a user is approaching or the fixture needs to be serviced.

The Franklin Park-headquartered company is developing more accurate motion detection for its products, which can save energy, by combining infrared and other sensors.

Sloan also received a patent for an ultraviolet-light hand sanitizer.
