Elmhurst Hospital had a simple goal—they didn’t want it to feel like a hospital. Architectural design firms Albert Kahn Associates, Inc. and Pratt Design Studio, together with Korda/Nemeth Engineering were tasked with reimagining a new $450 million health care campus that incorporated high-tech, comprehensive care with a home-like appeal.
The result was an 866,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art acute health care facility redesigned for patient-centered comfort inside and out. The contemporary Prairie-style design included thoughtful details like libraries and kitchens, all with abundant natural light. Sloan products were the perfect fit for both the facility manager’s maintenance goals as well as the architects’ vision. In fact, Sloan products are prominent throughout the new hospital in the public and private patient restrooms, giving added value to the hospital system’s tagline, “Healthy Driven.”
Elmhurst Hospital - Comfortable, Safer Healthcare Restroom Design
The new 295 private, same-hand patient rooms were designed for comfort and safety—of the patients as well as hospital staff. Sloan Royal® Slimline® Bedpan Washing system answered the call by giving nurses a more sanitary, efficient way to clean bedpans without the unwanted backsplash. The Royal Slimline system eliminates the need for unsanitary hose sprays, which require extra housekeeping and pose a slippage danger to patients.
The hospital recognizes that family plays a big role in patients’ health, even providing overnight accommodations that make it easier for family to be with their loved ones. As a result, restrooms must hold up to a high volume of daily users. Sloan Royal ESS Sensor Exposed Flushometers have automatic, hands-free flushing that helps control the spread of infectious diseases. They require little maintenance thanks to an effective electronic system that assures years of dependable, trouble-free operation. Plus, many of its internal components are identical to the manual Royal Flushometer that has been trusted for more than a century.
Architects added to the convenience factor by choosing hygienic Optima® Sensor Faucets (ETF610), which feature splash-proof control modules and LED service indicator lights for easier maintenance. Patients need only place their hands under the faucet head to activate water flow, allowing their nurse or caregiver to support them more easily. The faucet's clean lines and chrome-plated finish added a sleek vibe to the hotel-like design.
"It was important to us that our restroom products operate to the fullest. We chose Sloan because they are reliable and offer quality replacement parts. With hundreds of restrooms to maintain, we know that we can help avoid downtime using Sloan products."
